Google’s new Gemini can do it all
Gemini aims to revolutionize smart home interaction through natural, contextual assistance, from managing lights to generating bedtime stories.
Mumbai: In a major step forward for smart home technology, Google has officially launched “Gemini for Home,” a new AI-powered voice assistant designed to transform household management and daily routines. The announcement was made at the company’s Made by Google event, where executives highlighted Gemini’s advanced natural language capabilities and its integration across Google Home and Nest devices.
A smarter, more intuitive assistant
Gemini for Home leverages the latest generative AI models from Google, aiming to deliver a more natural, contextual, and helpful experience than its predecessor, Google Assistant. The new system is set to roll out starting in October 2025, with existing Nest speakers and displays scheduled to receive software updates enabling the transition.
Key to Gemini’s appeal is its ability to understand and execute multiple complex spoken commands in a single request. Users can, for example, say, “Dim the lights in the living room and set the temperature to 72 degrees,” or “Turn off all the lights except in my bedroom,” with Gemini managing the entire workflow seamlessly.
Enhanced features and flexibility
In addition to improving task automation, Gemini for Home introduces features like “Gemini Live,” an extended conversation mode that no longer requires users to repeat the wake phrase for ongoing interactions. This allows for brainstorming, creative assistance (such as generating personalised bedtime stories or meal plans), and troubleshooting household issues through a single, continuous conversation with the assistant.
The system will be available in both free and paid tiers, with the latter possibly offering premium functions or being bundled with services like Google One or Nest Aware. Details on feature differentiation between tiers are expected as the rollout progresses.
Competitive edge in a hot market
Google’s move comes amid intensifying competition in the smart home sector, most notably with Amazon’s generative-AI-enabled Alexa Plus. By introducing Gemini’s context-rich and flexible voice interactions, Google aims to solidify its position as a leading smart home ecosystem provider.
Looking ahead
Early access to Gemini for Home begins in October 2025, marking the start of a gradual but global rollout. As Google continues to refine and expand its AI-powered services, Gemini is poised to redefine how millions interact with their homes and their home technology.
