Tim Allen’s ‘Shifting Gears’ Teases Massive ‘Home Improvement’ Reunion in Sneak Peek for Season 2

Tim Allen just gave fans of Home Improvement the reunion they’ve been waiting for — even if it’s not quite the one they imagined. In a TikTok posted this week, Allen surprised everyone by bringing back Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning in a clever skit that quickly had fans buzzing. In the clip, the trio walks onto what looks like the old Home Improvement set, clearly expecting to see Tool Time again. But then Allen pops up, laughs, and points them to the right stage — the set of his current sitcom, Shifting Gears. What seemed like just a funny behind-the-scenes prank turned out to be the real deal: the three will officially guest star in the Shifting Gears Season 2 premiere on October 1. Richardson, Karn, and Dunning will play a role in the new season’s first episode, though ABC isn’t saying who they’re playing yet. The only tease is that they’ll help Allen’s latest character “in an unexpected way.”

The video went viral pretty much instantly. Fans flooded the comments section with messages like, “Bring back Home Improvement!!!” and “This was my childhood.” Others noticed how little the cast seems to have aged, with one person even joking, “Is Debbe Dunning a vampire…????” Clearly, the nostalgia hit hard.

What Is ‘Shifting Gears’ About?

If you haven’t watched Shifting Gears yet, the show stars Allen as Matt Parker, a widowed vintage car restoration shop owner. Things get messy when his estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) moves in with her two kids. It’s more cars than power tools, but Allen’s still doing what he does best — playing a dad who always finds himself in funny, chaotic situations. The new sitcom isn’t a full-on reboot of Home Improvement, but the reunion definitely makes it feel like Allen’s bringing things full circle.

For fans who grew up in the ’90s, Home Improvement was a huge part of TV back then. It ran from 1991 to 1999 and turned Allen into a household name. Richardson was the heart of the show as Jill, Karn made flannel shirts cool as Al Borland, and Dunning came in later as the always-reliable Heidi. Now, seeing them all together again — even in a different setting — is a fun reminder of why people loved the show in the first place. It may not be the Tool Time revival some fans have dreamed of, but it’s the closest thing we’ve gotten in 25 years.

Shifting Gears Season 2 premieres Wednesday, October 1 on ABC.
