Ring Adds Smart Smoke Detector to Home Security Lineup

Ring is expanding its home security lineup with a smart smoke and CO detector.

The Amazon-owned company is teaming up with Kidde, which makes fire safety devices, on a collection of Smart Smoke and Combination Alarms (Smoke + CO) with Ring technology built-in alongside a new optional 24/7 Smoke & CO Monitoring service.

The new alarms feature Kidde’s existing smoke detection technology, which Kidde says can sense smoke up to 25% faster than regular detectors. That detection is also three times more precise to reduce false alarms from things like kitchen mishaps, Kidde says.

When a device detects a house fire or carbon monoxide, customers will be notified via the Ring app on top of the usual alarm sound so people inside and outside the house will know when something is amiss.

Ring also says the new alarms will make low-battery chirping less of a nuisance. The Ring app will give a seven-day warning that the batteries need changing before the chirping starts.

The alarm includes access to Ring’s new 24/7 monitoring service. For $5 per month, users can talk to trained agents who help monitor the home. If the alarm goes off and no one does anything about it, the agent will call emergency services on behalf of the customer. Ring says the monitoring service is separate from existing Ring subscriptions; users don’t need one to get the other. These alarms are also Wi-Fi connected and don’t require a Ring Alarm, hub, or other device to operate, Ring says.

The Kidde Smart Smoke device will sell for $54.97; a combination smoke and CO alarm will go for $74.97. Look for them at Home Depot in April.

Alongside the alarm, Amazon also announced that it’s bringing 2K video resolution to its existing Ring Spotlight Cam Pro and Ring Floodlight Cam Pro models. Rollout of the update to enable 2K resolution begins on Jan. 8 through the Ring app for no extra charge.

Joe Hindy

Hello, my name is Joe and I am a tech blogger. My first real experience with tech came at the tender age of 6 when I started playing Final Fantasy IV (II on the SNES) on the family’s living room console. As a teenager, I cobbled together my first PC build using old parts from several ancient PCs, and really started getting into things in my 20s. I served in the US Army as a broadcast journalist. Afterward, I served as a news writer for XDA-Developers before I spent 11 years as an Editor, and eventually Senior Editor, of Android Authority. I specialize in gaming, mobile tech, and PC hardware, but I enjoy pretty much anything that has electricity running through it.
