Eye on Small Business: SBG Home & Design, Rye Brook

The recently opened SBG Home & Design  at the Rye Ridge Shopping Center in Rye Brook, is the “passionate creation” of Rye Brook resident and designer Suzanne Goldberg. The Westfair Business Journal caught up with her to talk about design, brick-and-mortar stores, home goods and her collaboration with the extraordinary Stephen Wilson embroidery studio.

Suzanne, tell us a bit about your background in design and/or retail. Is this your first store?

“Yes, this is my first retail store. For years, I’ve been immersed in design, running my own design firm for over 20 years. I wanted to create a place where my experience in home decor and design could come together for the community. The idea was to offer both a curated retail experience and a design studio…. From in-store styling to comprehensive design solutions, our team is equipped to assist with every aspect of your project. With three skilled designers, two stylists and a color consultant on staff, we’re here to help transform your space into something truly special.”

And your connection to Westchester County and specifically Rye Brook?

“I grew up in Scarsdale and have lived in Rye Brook for many years, where I also raised my daughter. Having deep roots in this community, I felt there was a real opportunity to bring a home decor and design studio to the area – something accessible and inviting for everyone here.”

How long did it take you to launch SBG Home Design?

“The concept has been in development for a few years. After an extensive search, I finally secured a location at Rye Ridge. I signed the lease in February, took possession in June and we officially opened our doors in September.”

What are some of the challenges of starting a brick-and-mortar business in our area? How, for instance, do you compete successfully with the big homeware retailers and, of course, online retailers?

“One of the biggest challenges was securing the perfect location that really speaks to the local community, but it was worth the time invested. Opening a brick-and-mortar store comes with its own set of hurdles, from building a unique product selection to ensuring that an in-store experience feels inviting and personalized – something online and big-box retailers can struggle to offer. Additionally, our website allows customers to shop 24/7, with convenient next-day in-store pickup at Rye Ridge. It’s all about blending local presence with modern convenience.”

Are you the sole buyer for your business? Where do you mainly source your stock?

“Yes, I’m the primary buyer, drawing on years of experience in interior design and sourcing. I attend trade shows and have built strong industry connections that help me curate a distinctive selection. I also value input from my team. Our visual merchandiser and staff all bring unique insights.”

And a word about the Stephen Wilson Studio and how you work together?

“I discovered Stephen Wilson’s work at a show and was immediately captivated by the intricate detail and unique approach he brings to his embroidery art. His blend of art, fashion and music resonated with me on so many levels.”

Your website is impressive, and so is the beautiful, original Judaica you offer.

“Our Judaica collection is carefully curated with modern, thoughtful pieces that reflect tradition in fresh, unique ways. We aim to offer selections that speak to everyone, with designs that appeal beyond Judaica alone. From Judaica to other home accents, our goal is to bring together pieces that feel meaningful and inviting for any home.”

Lastly, that “B” in SBG:  Is that your middle name?

“In a sense, yes. SBG represents the brand I’ve created, which combines the essence of home and design. I wanted to keep the name of the corporation while adding a personal touch that reflects my vision for the business.”
