CES is not open to the general public, but industry professionals, media, and analysts from around the world attend to see the newest breakthroughs in technology.
Here are some interesting smart home products that are being exhibited at this year’s show.
Aqara
Aqara designs and develops hardware and software solutions for the smart home. The name, Aqara, is a combination of the Latin words “Acutulus” (smart) and “Ara” (home).
Aqara was founded in 2009 and it has grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of smart home products in the world. Worldwide, Aqara has over 13 million customers that have activated over 51 million devices.

At CES Aqara has announced their brand new Smart Lock U400. The U400 leverages Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to redefine the hands-free entry experience by focusing on “spatial awareness” and pinpoint precision. Unlike traditional Bluetooth-based locks that rely on signal strength, UWB utilizes Time-of-Flight (ToF) and Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) measurements. This allows the lock to determine an authorized user’s location with centimeter-level accuracy and ensures the door only unlocks when the user is directly approaching from the outside, rather than just passing by or standing near the door inside the house.
Security is a primary feature of the U400’s design. The U400 measures the time it takes for a signal to travel between devices, making it immune to “relay attacks” where intruders amplify a distant signal to trick a lock into opening. Furthermore, the U400 utilizes Scrambled Timestamp Sequences (STS) to provide a cryptographically secure layer of protection that ensures the communication between the smartphone or wearable and the lock cannot be intercepted or manipulated by unauthorized parties.
Other features of the U400 include:
- Apple Home Key Support: Allows hands-free “unlock on approach” or “tap-to-unlock” using an iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Biometric & Digital Entry: Includes a fingerprint scanner and support for personal passcodes (one-time or recurring).
- Alternative Methods: Features NFC compatibility, mobile app control, and voice commands via Siri or Alexa.
- Emergency Backup: Includes traditional mechanical keys for physical access if needed.
- Matter-Certified: Natively compatible with Matter over Thread, allowing it to work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
- Aliro-Ready: Designed to support the industry-unifying Aliro protocol for cross-manufacturer compatibility with smartphones and wearables.
- No Hub Required: Can connect directly to any Matter platform via a Thread Border Router without needing a specific Aqara hub.
- Built-in Gyroscope: Enables an Auto-Lock feature that secures the door after each use without requiring external door sensors.
- Weather Resistance: Suitable for outdoor use. The lock is IP65-rated to withstand dust, splashes, and heavy rain.
- Eco-Friendly Power: Equipped with a 4880 mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery providing up to 6 months of life per charge.
Aqara provided me with a sample of the Smart Lock U400 to try before CES.
The Smart Lock U400 comes with a rechargeable battery. So, the first thing you will need to do is to charge it. Aqara doesn’t include a USB-C cable or a charger with the lock so you will need to supply those yourself.
If you are installing the lock in a new door, Aqara includes instructions and a drilling template to help you with the installation. If you are just replacing an existing deadbolt lock, then you can skip the first part of the instructions and just follow the steps for installing the lock itself.
There is one important thing to be aware of. I have tested a good number of smart locks over the years. The door that I tested most of these locks in is drilled with a 2” diameter hole for the lock mechanism. Every lock I’ve tested has fit this door. The Aqara Smart Lock U400 requires a 2-1/8” hole. So, if you are like me, and your door is drilled with only a 2” hole, it becomes a challenging job to enlarge the existing hole in the door. So before purchasing the U400, you may want to check your door to validate the size of the hole for the lock mechanism.
In addition, smart locks are quite particular as to how the different mechanical parts are aligned during installation. You may have to make minor adjustments before the lock mechanism will operate smoothly and won’t overload the capability of the lock’s motor to lock/unlock the door.
With the physical installation of the lock complete, the next step is to setup the lock with the Aqara app. All that is required is to scan the Aqara QR code on the lock with the app and the app will then guide you through the setup process. To access all the features of the lock, I linked it to an Aqara hub though it can just be linked to a Matter compatible smart home ecosystem.
In practice, the lock works very well. The UWB technology built into this lock is close to magic. You simply walk up to the door and just when you would reach for the door knob to open the door the lock unlocks. No keying in a code, pulling off a glove during the middle of the winter to scan for a fingerprint, or pulling out your phone to tap the lock and open it with Apple Home Key. UWB is a significant step up in convenience.
I really like technology but I am a realist that “Murphy’s Law” is always in play. So, I also really like that Aqara includes traditional mechanical keys for opening the lock in an emergency.
The U400 is a very nice, and very full featured, smart lock. UWB technology for hands-free unlocking sets it apart from the competition. The installation process is very similar to smart locks from other manufacturers. But, you will want to make sure that your door is drilled with a 2-1/8” hole for the lock mechanism or the installation process will be much more challenging.
