2024 U.S. Home Burglary Rates Reveal New Mexico as State with Most Break-Ins

The latest FBI data on burglary rates “reveals significant variations in home security across the United States,” according to a new analysis by Deep Sentinel Home Security.

To clarify, when we refer to burglary here, he is referring specifically to the act of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime in said building. According to separate data, at least 50% of burglaries occur from the hours of 8 P.M. and 7 A.M., with most burglars finding entry into the house through the front door.

New Mexico leads the nation with the highest home burglary rate, while Maine boasts the lowest, based on the most recent rankings. Burglaries did see a drop in burglaries by 7.6% in 2023, reflective of an ongoing downtrend since the pandemic, but Deep Sentinel stresses it’s not something worth letting your guard down over as property crimes like burglaries still accounted for 84% of all reported crimes in 2023.

In fact, these findings “underscore the importance of investing in home security, particularly in regions with elevated crime rates,” according to the Deep Sentinel announcement, citing the role that surveillance technology plays in deterring would-be burglars from making a move.
